Global Diagnostics is now offering 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis)

Global Diagnostics is now offering 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis) at South West Health Campus. 3D Mammography is new breast imaging technology that has been proven to improve the accuracy in diagnosis of breast cancer. It is performed as part of a diagnostic mammogram examination. In addition to the standard mammographic views, a specialised view (tomographic) is taken to produce 3-D images. Tomographic view is completed within seconds from a single sweep of the x-ray arm, creating a series of detailed images which together make up the 3D imaging of the breast.

3D mammography improves cancer detection in dense breasts. Research has shown that dense breasts are more likely to develop cancer, a problem compounded by the fact that cancer in dense breasts can be difficult to detect on mammograms.

A study compared 3D mammography with Digital Mammography (DM) to DM on its own in 25,547 women between ages 50 and 69. Findings included:

•          211 cancers found with 3D compared to 163 with DM

•          80% of cancers occurring in dense breasts were detected with 3D compared to 59% with DM

3D mammography increases breast cancer detection and reduces false positives. For more information, please call one of our friendly staff on 9726 6999.
